This is for you if

  • You're running, cycling or racing beyond about 60–90 minutes and need steady carbohydrate to hold your pace
  • You want a gel you can take without chewing — squeeze it in, swallow, wash down with water, and keep moving
  • You sweat heavily or race in heat and want real electrolytes, not just sugar (reach for the Salted flavours)
  • You want the option of a caffeine hit for the back half of long efforts (Cocoa Choco or Espresso Cappuccino)

What changes, and when

  • 10 min before Take your first gel about ten minutes before you start — it tops up blood glucose as you begin
  • Every 30 min One gel every 30 minutes maintains roughly 50g of carbohydrate per hour — the working range for a glucose-based fuel
  • Through the effort Each gel replaces sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride lost in sweat, alongside the carbohydrate
  • Hot / heavy-sweat days Switch to a Salted flavour for about 40% more sodium (111mg vs 80mg) when you're sweating hard or racing in heat
  • When you need focus Use Cocoa Choco (50mg) or Espresso Cappuccino (100mg) in the back half of a long session for a caffeine lift

Note: A gel is intra-workout fuel, not an everyday supplement — its value shows up on efforts long enough to run your glycogen down, roughly 60–90 minutes and beyond. The carbohydrate is glucose-based (maltodextrin + dextrose), which the body can oxidise at up to about 60g per hour, so the every-30-minutes protocol (~50g/hr) sits comfortably inside that ceiling. Always take it with water, and practise your fuelling and hydration in training before you rely on it in a race. Not a substitute for a varied diet.

Key clinical outcomes supported

  • Endurance performance — carbohydrate during prolonged exercise (beyond ~60–90 min) is one of the best-established performance aids in sports nutrition
  • Sustained pace & delayed fatigue — steady glucose delivery helps maintain output when muscle glycogen runs low
  • Electrolyte replacement — sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride replace what's lost in sweat, with extra sodium in the Salted flavours for heavy sweaters
  • Focus & perceived effort (caffeinated flavours) — caffeine is a well-evidenced ergogenic aid; Cocoa Choco and Espresso Cappuccino let you time it
  • Fast, no-chew delivery — a squeeze-and-swallow format designed for use mid-run or mid-ride without breaking rhythm

Dosage & Rationale

1 gel about 10 minutes before you start, then 1 gel every 30 minutes — always with water.

Why every 30 minutes? — One
gel per half-hour delivers roughly 50g of carbohydrate per hour. The carbs are glucose-based (maltodextrin for steady release, dextrose for a fast hit), which the body oxidises at up to about 60g/hr — so this protocol keeps blood glucose and pace steady on long efforts without overshooting what you can absorb.

Why take it with water? — Gel 100
is a concentrated gel. Washing it down with a few sips of water — or Unived
Elite Drink Mix — helps it digest and reduces the chance of GI upset. Avoid taking gels back-to-back without fluid.

Electrolytes, and when to go Salted — Every gel replaces sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride lost in sweat. If you're a heavy or salty sweater, or racing in heat and humidity, choose Salted Lime or Salted Caramel — the added sea salt lifts sodium from 80mg to 111mg and chloride from 175mg to 223mg per gel.

Caffeine strategy — Keep the caffeinated flavours for when you want a lift: Cocoa Choco (50mg) or Espresso Cappuccino (100mg), typically in the second half of a long race. Count them toward your daily caffeine total — the performance range is roughly 3–6 mg per kg of body weight, and around 400mg/day is a common general upper guide for adults.

About the beta-alanine — Each gel contains 200mg of beta-alanine. Be straight about this: beta-alanine's performance benefit comes from taking it daily over weeks to raise muscle carnosine — it is not an in-race buffer. The amount here contributes to that ongoing intake rather than doing anything acute, and 200mg is far too low to cause the harmless skin-tingling associated with large single doses.
